RoughRiders Youth Hockey League - RYHL

RoughRiders Hockey Club Cedar Rapids is proud to announce the inaugural season of their own in-house league. The RYHL will offer an opportunity for every RRHCCR player to play in a 20-game season. The season will start in October and last through mid-March.

The 20-game season will cost $300 per player with a 30% discount for RRHCCR travel players. This is a USA Hockey sanctioned league so all players, coaches, volunteers, and parents will be required to have all USA documentation and certification. More details to come.

RRHCCR will be hosting a level 1 USA Hockey Certification class in October.

The RYHL at this time does not have exact information on the division of age groups as that will hinge on the interest that the membership demonstrates in participating. The Hockey Director in a perfect scenario would have the following divisions:

8u Division - 8u and below via cross-ice game formats. This is in align with the American Development Model and Long-Term Athlete Development plan put forth by USA Hockey. See a great video on statistics on cross ice games for 8u below.

Hockey Analytics Used in 8u

10u-14u Division - The 10u through 14u division will consist of the Green and Black divisions. See below for more details on team selection.

Team Selection - Coaches' Draft

The teams for the season, just as in little league, will be drafted snake style by the coaching staff of each individual team. The coaches know the players better than anyone and by allowing them to draft players would ensure even teams. However, in the event of uneven distribution of players the Hockey Director reserves the right to require trades among RYHL teams.

The registration will be done electronically through TeamSnap. Upon registering a deposit of $150 will be required with the next and final installment coming on November 1, 2018. Registration will be available soon!

RYHL Instructional - Skills, Drills, and Fun

The RYHL will also offer instructional hockey. The Skills, Drills, and Fun program will be available to non-travel players only at this time. The total season start, and end dates are in the process of being finalized by the Board of Directors, Hockey Director, and Cedar Rapids Ice Arena management. The players will receive around 40 ice touches of practice through the duration of the season for a cost of $475. This is for the type of player that is looking to learn the game of hockey in a positive environment but are not ready for the commitment to travel hockey. All players must have gone through the Learn To Play Program offered by the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena.

The practices will occur twice per week with Hockey Director, Dustin Timm leading the development of the players supplemented by willing volunteer coaches. This is a USA Hockey sanctioned program so all volunteer coaches must go through appropriate registration and certification. Practices will consist of FUNdementals such as skating, pucks skills, and a healthy dose of small area games that incorporate hockey concepts.
