About RoughRiders Hockey Club - Cedar Rapids (RRHCCR)

The RoughRiders Hockey Club Cedar Rapids (RRHCCR) is operated by a Board of Directors. Board members are elected annually for two-year terms. See the Board of Directors page for more information.

Our Vision

The RRHCCR seeks to build local and regional awareness about the benefits youth hockey offers by investing in the physical and emotional development of players so they may serve as advocates and ambassadors for the sport throughout their life.

Our Mission

The mission of the RRHCCR is to provide a consistent training framework and environment designed to optimize the skill development of young athletes in a positive atmosphere of appropriately matched competition where sportsmanship and personal enjoyment are top priorities.

Our History

Formed in 2002 when two organizations combined, the RRHCCR is a 501(c)3 organization. The RRHCCR is a member of the Mid-West Amateur Hockey Association (MWAHA) comprised of associations from Iowa, Kansas, Missouri and Nebraska. The RRHCCR is a member of USA Hockey.

Our Teams

Program participation may vary each season, although in most years the RRHCCR offers two teams at the Pee Wee and Squirt levels. As the number of participants allow, the RRHCCR creates youth teams ranging from 8U - Mite (6 to 8 years), 10U - Squirt (9 to 10 years), 12U - Pee Wee (11 to 12 years), and 14U - Bantam (13 to 14 years). A high school program and all-girl U19 (Lady Rider) program also operate out of the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena.

The RRHCCR follows the USA Hockey model of half-ice, 4-on-4 with goalies for Mite teams.

Teams frequently include boys and girls through the Pee Wee level, while girls also have the option of participating in the Lady Rider program. Day-to-day coordination of the Lady Rider team is managed separately. Many of its players travel to Cedar Rapids from neighboring cities to practice and compete.

Our Programs

- Team tryouts are generally held mid-August each year, with the season beginning October 1 and running through mid-March.

- The RRHCCR welcomes new players any time after season start. Contact the coaching coordinator(s) to begin discussion about placement and fees.

- Currently our coaching model provides one hour of individual skills each week for all levels. We call this session ADM.

- Our current coaching model also provides one hour of practice twice each week for Squirt, Pee Wee, and Bantam levels. Mites practice once each week for an hour.

- Financial consideration may be granted to families in need of assistance. See the scholarship page for more information.

- Payment of fees is generally broken into three installments payable throughout the season.

- Parent volunteering is necessary to run the all-volunteer travel hockey program. See the volunteer page for details.

- The RRHCCR has some used equipment in stock, available to players who from time to time forget equipment. Equipment may also be loaned out for more extended periods of time if necessary.
